Laser cleaning a historic industrial engine

Conservators at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester used our active fibre ‘Infinito’ laser cleaning system to remove iron corrosion from a large industrial engine on display in the recently renovated Power Hall. The diesel-powered engine was built by the National Gas Engine Co. Ltd. in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1928. Engines such as this took over from steam-powered engines and were ideal for driving electric generators – this one supplied power to the Safety in Mines Research Establishment in Buxton. The 100W Infinito laser enabled conservators to remove corrosion from the iron surface gently and quickly.
